In this thought-provoking study of recent deflections and defections from liberal democracy in Europe, the US and elsewhere, Aviezer Tucker reminds us that democracy and liberalism are independent traditions with contrasting ideals. Each may reinforce, but neither requires the other. So seen, their late twentieth century coupling looks less like fate than contingency. History, for Tucker, is not cheering liberal democracy on.
