For more than a decade, western societies have struggled to respond to declining prosperity, accelerating climate change and rising inequalities. A 'paradigm shift' in economic theory and public policy seems overdue. But if neoliberalism is dead, what should replace it? In this Political Quarterly Annual Lecture, Michael Jacobs will explore the theoretical roots of the 'polycrisis' and how governments should approach policy making in a world of plural goals and multiple time horizons.

Michael Jacobs is Professor of Political Economy at the University of Sheffield. An economist and political theorist, his work focuses on post-neoliberal economic theory and policy, the political economy of climate change, and green and social democratic thought. He was formerly a member of the Council of Economic Advisers at the Treasury, a special adviser to Gordon Brown in the No 10 Policy Unit, and Director of the IPPR Commission on Economic Justice.
