Just before Christmas last year, Ireland decided to join the European Monetary System. Simultaneously, all other members of the EEC, with the exception of the United Kingdom, signified their intention of uniting in this French- and West German-inspired currency regime which was aiming at creating a stable monetary zone in Western Europe.
