American overreach in the twenty-first century lasted for almost exactly twenty years, from 9/11 in 2001 to 15 August 2021, and Afghanistan was there throughout. The war launched from a cave in the Tora Bora mountains ended in the chaos and shame of the evacuation from Kabul. And the president responsible for performing the last rites, Joe Biden, was ironically the one who had been most consistently opposed to US military involvement.
