Call for Copyeditors
We wish to appoint a team of copyeditors who will ensure that all accepted submissions to The Political Quarterly are thoroughly copyedited according to PQ style. Our copyeditors are responsible to the general editorial team and work directly to the Managing Editor, who oversees the general production process.
PQ is not a regular academic journal: whilst academic articles form the basis of the content, we also welcome submissions in a more journalistic style, as well as shorter reports, surveys, and book reviews. The purpose is to provide access to current academic debates and draw on critical intellectual arguments, but our hallmark is the use of plain English, avoiding theoretical and technical jargon. We are broadly progressive in outlook, but we publish a wide range of authors and viewpoints.
PQ prides itself on being able to turn around submissions quickly and efficiently. Although PQ is a ‘quarterly’, most articles are published online as and when the final, typeset version has been approved. We aim for a ‘light touch’ copyedit that retains the original spirit of the piece, while ensuring consistency, grammatical correctness, and adherence to our brief style guide.
Person specification
Ideally, we wish to appoint (as soon as possible):
- Experienced copyeditors
- People with a background working with journals
- People with a politics or political science background
- People who can be flexible and respond quickly if required
In return PQ offers an hourly rate along Chartered Institute of Editors and Proofreaders (CIEP) guidelines and a friendly, collaborative work environment. Appointments are on a self-employed basis. PQ operates a ‘virtual office’ with copyeditors working remotely.
For more information about PQ, please explore our website. See also our publisher website for background information on PQ and recent open access publications.
Applications
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. If you are interested, please send a covering letter via email to our Managing Editor, Emma Anderson (emma.anderson@politicalquarterly.net), providing details of your relevant experience and qualifications, your reason/s for applying and your availability. You may also include a short CV if you wish.
The second stage of the selection process will involve a short sample copyedit and at this point we would request details of two referees if they have not already been provided.
